HIAWASSEE CITY COUNCIL MINUTES
March 6th, 2018
Meeting of the Hiawassee City Council was called to order at 6:00 pm by Mayor Liz Ordiales
Invocation was delivered by Kris Berrong and was followed by Pledge of Allegiance.
Present, in addition to the Mayor and Council member Kris Berrong, were Council Members Amy Barrett, Anne Mitchell, Nancy Noblet, and Patsy Owens. Staff members present were Police Chief Paul Smith and City Clerk Bonnie Kendrick.
Mayor Liz welcomed guests and acknowledged Mr. Ed Burton who would be reporting to the council on the findings of the financial audit for fiscal year 2107 (July 1, 2016 – June 30, 2017).
Motion to adopt the amended agenda, which included Mr. Burton’s report on the financial audit, was made by Nancy Noblet, and seconded by Anne Mitchell with all in favor.
Mr. Burton informed the council that his firm had completed the 2017 fiscal year audit. He reported a repeat finding of non-timely adjustments to the budget, which can be corrected by working with our CPA firm for faster turnaround of bookwork and entries made on a timelier basis. An additional finding of a budget overrun (purchase of a police car) can be correct by amending the budget when necessary during the year. Additionally, he advised the council to be vigilant in raising the water rates when needed and cutting expenses where possible.
