HIAWASSEE CITY COUNCIL MINUTES

The June 2020 City Council Meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. on June 2nd in council chambers by Mayor Liz Ordiales.  The meeting was closed to the public but was broadcast via Facebook Live on the City of Hiawassee Facebook Site.

The Invocation was given by Councilmember Nancy Noblet and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

The Mayor’s announcements included an update from Dr. Toomey of the Georgia Department of Health.  Dr. Toomey is hopeful that a vaccine may be available in early 2021.  The number of confirmed cases in Towns and Union counties is slowly rising as the state has opened.  However, the number of current hospitalizations is the lowest it has been since Governor Kemp declared the state of emergency.

This week we received approval from TVA for the Kayak ramp and the children’s play area at Lloyd’s landing. The church family of J.C. Berrong would like to designate and area on the Square to commemorate J.C.’s life and Mayor Liz will meet with them next week to work out details.

Mayor Ordiales requested that the agenda be amended as follows: The budget ordinance was amended to be the first reading instead of the adoption and the new water rate increase for the Towns County Water Authority was added to the agenda as the item had not been finalized before the agenda was set. The motion to adopt the final agenda as amended was made by Councilmember Amy Barrett, seconded by Councilmember Jay Chastain, Jr with all in favor.

There was no new or old business.

Motion to approve the Consent Agenda, which consisted of the Minutes of the May 5th Council Meeting and the May 26th Public Hearing and Work Session as well as the March Financials, was made by Councilmember Jay  Chastain, Jr, seconded by Councilmember Nancy Noblet with all in favor.

Motion to approve the first reading of the 2020-2021 Fiscal Year Budget was made by Councilmember Nancy Noblet, seconded by Councilmember Patsy Owens with all in favor.

Mayor Ordiales advised the council that DDA member Teresa Andretta had stepped down and she has appointed Rob Sollie to complete Teresa’s term.

Motion to adopt the revised Comp Plan to include Broadband Ready initiative was made by Councilmember Amy Barrett, seconded by Councilmember Jay Chastain, Jr. with all in favor.

Motion to approve the water rate increase for Towns County Water Authority was made by Councilmember Anne Mitchell, seconded by Councilmember Patsy Owens with all in favor.

There was no need for an executive session.

Motion to adjourn was made by Councilmember Anne Mitchell, seconded by Councilmember Patsy Owens with all in favor.  Meeting adjourned at 6:09 pm.
