June 1st City Council Minutes

The City of Hiawassee June City Council meeting was called to order at 6:04PM on June 1st, 2021 in the Council Chambers by Mayor Liz Ordiales. The meeting was broadcast over FaceBook Live.

Present in addition to the Mayor were Council members Anne Mitchell, Patsy Owens, Nancy Noblet, Amy Barrett and Jay Chastain.   Staff present were Economic Development Director Denise McKay and City Clerk Bonnie Kendrick. 

Mayor Ordiales welcomed our only guest, Jarrett Whitener of the Towns County Herald and wished him well as he will be moving to Texas.  The announcements included the GMA District 2 meeting will be held at Hamilton Gardens on June 14th from 10 – 11:30 and the new lights are up on the Square.

Motion to approve the agenda as distributed was made by Council member Jay Chastain, seconded by Council member Nancy Noblet with all in favor.

The only old business is the Public Hearing for the Change to Planning/Development Ordinance will be held on June 17th at 6PM at the Towns County Civic Center.   Final discussion will be at the June 28th Work Session and second reading will be at the July 6th City Council Meeting.

Motion to approve the consent agenda, which consists of the minutes from the May 4th, 2021 City Council Meeting, the May 24th, 2021 Work Session, the May 15th Council retreat by Gordon Mainer and the February 2021 Financials was made by Council member Amy Barrett, seconded by Council member Patsy Owens with all in favor.

Motion to approve the second reading 2021-2022 Budget ordinance was made by Council member Amy Barrett and seconded by Council member Jay Chastain, with all in favor. 

Motion to approve the Package Sale of Distilled Spirits Referendum Resolution was made by Council member Anne Mitchell and seconded by Council member Patsy Owens, with all in favor.

The resolution to approve the Water Treatment Plant GEFA Loan DW15030 Timeframe extension was made by Council member Nancy Noblet and seconded by Council member Jay Chastain, with all in favor.

Motion to approval a new bank account for ARPA funding was made by Council member Jay Chastain and seconded by Council member Nancy Noblet, with all in favor.

Motion to approval the appointment of Ashlyn LaPorte to the DDA Board of Directors was made by Council member Jay Chastain and seconded by Council member Patsy Owens, with all in favor.

There was no need for executive session.

Motion to adjourn was made by Council member Nancy Noblet, seconded by Council member Amy Barrett with all in favor.  Meeting adjourned at 6:12pm.
