HIAWASSEE CITY COUNCIL MINUTES October 4th, 2022 6 PM

The City of Hiawassee October City Council meeting was called to order at 6PM on October 4th, 2022, in the Council Chambers by Mayor Liz Ordiales. The meeting was open to the public and broadcast over FaceBook Live. 

Present in addition to the Mayor were Council members Anne Mitchell, Patsy Owens, Nancy Noblet, Amy Barrett and Jay Chastain. Staff present were Economic Development Director Denise McKay and City Clerk Bonnie Kendrick.

The Invocation was given by Council member Nancy Noblet and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.  

Mayor Ordiales welcomed Jonathan Wilson and Brittany Holbrooks of the Towns County Herald.  Mayor Ordiales had two announcements – one very sad and one very good.  Pat Malone’s wife passed away this morning.  Pat works for the WJUL Radio and was often in attendance at meetings.  The second is that the City has been awarded a $690,000.00 grant for the boardwalk from Mayors Park to Lloyds Landing.  It will be approximately a $900,000.00 project, will be approximately 815 feel long with two fishing piers.

Motion to approve the agenda as distributed was made by Council member Nancy Noblet, seconded by Council Member Amy Barrett with all in favor.

In Old Business the motion to approve the Hotel/Motel Tax Resolution to increase tax from 5% to 8% was made by Anne Mitchell, seconded by Council Member Patsy Owens with all in favor.

In new business, motion to approve the Consent Agenda, which consists of the September 6th City Council Meeting Minutes and September 26th City Council Work Session minutes, was made by Council member Jay Chastain seconded by Council member Patsy Owens with all in favor.

Motion to approve the Policy to write off Old Uncleared Checks at 18 Months was made by Council member Nancy Noblet seconded by Council member Jay Chastain with all in favor.

Motion to approve the Millage Rate for 2022 to the Rollback of 1.972 was made by Council member Nancy Noblet and seconded by Council member Jay Chastain. Approving the roll back of the millage rate were Council members Amy Barrett, Patsy Owens, Nancy Noblet and Jay Chastain.  Council member Anne Mitchell voted against the rollback.

There was no need for executive session.


There being no other business, motion to adjourn was made by Council member Amy Barrett, seconded by Council member Jay Chastain with all present in favor. Meeting adjourned at 6:05pm.
