PLANNING COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES
Monday October 21st, 2024, 6PM
The Hiawassee Building and Planning Committee met on Monday, October 21st, 2024, at 6PM in the Council Chambers at the Hiawassee City Hall 50 River St., Hiawassee, GA. The meeting was called to order by Chairman Nancy Noblet.
Present in addition to Charman Noblet, were Committee members Ken Pollard, Paul Scherer, Matt Espalin and Jonathan Wilson. Staff present was City Clerk Bonnie Kendrick.
The invocation was given by City Clerk Bonnie Kendrick and was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
Motion to approve the agenda as distributed was made by Mr. Espalin, seconded by Mr. Wilson with all in favor.
Motion to approve the minutes of the October 15, 2024, Public Hearing (Discovery Homes/Timberlake Plaza variance request) meeting was made by Mr. Scherer, seconded by Mr. Pollard with all in favor.
Chairman Noblet thanked Mr. Crawford for coming forward with his plan and his willingness to work with the city. She realized the peculiarity of the lot and that Mr. Crawford has had to give up the retail space that would have provided him with some income. Committee members Pollard, Scherer, Espalin, and Wilson all agreed the variance request was for hardship which was a viable reason to grant the variance. Mr. Crawford was asked about the number of apartments, and he stated that there would be two. Therefore, there will be 3 sewer and water tie-ons – one for the commercial space and one for each apartment. Mr. Crawford has sent an updated plan with the reduced footprint to City Attorney Thomas Mitchell, but he has not received a response yet. Chairman Noblet stated that Attorney Mitchell has been in court and not able to reply yet. Mr. Crawford asked about next steps. Once updated plans are submitted, there will likely be very little delay in receiving approval for the permit with the variance documented. The committee voted unanimously to grant the variance.
Motion to adjourn the meeting was made by Mr. Wilson, seconded by Mr. Espalin with all in favor. Meeting adjourned at 6:15pm.
