Current Drought Status
The Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) today announced a statewide Drought Response Level 1 Declaration for all public water systems, including the City of Hiawassee, utilizing surface water and/or groundwater, effective April 27, 2026.
A drought is an extended period of time of abnormally low precipitation resulting in a shortage of water. Droughts can last from a few months to several years and can occur in any climate.
Towns County is currently in an extreme drought, the second to highest drought designation.
Water Use Restrictions and Recommendations
There are no new current water restrictions, but the public is encouraged to conserve if possible.
At Drought Response Level 1, permitted outdoor water use remains unchanged, and watering lawns and outdoor plants is only permitted between 4:00 p.m. and 10:00 a.m.
Residents and businesses are encouraged to take simple steps to conserve water and help protect Georgia’s water resources. Conservation tips include:
- Water lawns and landscapes only during early morning or evening hours to reduce evaporation
- Adjust sprinklers so only your lawn is watered and not the house, sidewalk, or street
- Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways, decks, and sidewalks
- Fix leaking faucets, toilets, and irrigation systems promptly
- Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads
- Scrape dishes instead of rinsing before placing in dishwasher
- Reduce shower times
- Turn off the tap while brushing teeth or shaving
- Install water-efficient fixtures and appliances where possible

After the Drought
Drought conditions can have adverse effects even after the drought has passed. After the drought, be prepared for:
- Increased erosion due to lack of grass and vegetation
- Falling trees due to weakened root structures
- Leaking foundations and drainage pipes due to settling
- Continuing conserving water as surface water and groundwater sources take time to recover
